Popular Anime Genres: Mecha Anime

The habit of watching anime is growing these days. As a matter of fact, even western cartoons are now influenced by anime. Technically speaking, anime is a form of cartoon originating from Japan. However, modern versions come from other countries, too. There are elements that distinguish anime from western cartoons, including its categories which are divided according to their themes.

One of the most patronized anime genres is called mecha where robots play significant roles in the show or movie. The term mecha comes from the Japanese word “meka” which is also acknowledged as the abbreviation of the word mechanical. In Japan, mecha used to refer to anything that resembles a machine, such as appliances, cars, and computers.

This anime genre has subtypes, too. The first subcategory is called Super Robot which involves individual vehicles combining as one to form a larger one. It often portrays three or more lead characters that have different personalities and attitudes. Each character maneuvers a certain vehicle which serves as one body part of the robot.

Usually, Super Robot anime have a different kind of vehicle for every lead character. Some characters have aircrafts, while some have land cruisers. There are also others that pilot ships. Some examples of Super Robot series that can make you watch anime are Voltes V, Mazinger Z, and Combatler V. However, there are western cartoons that adapt the concept such as Megas XLR.

There are some Super Robots that do not follow the fusion of different characters format such as Daimos. Real Robot, on the other hand, is another subtype of mecha which uses robots as armors. These are somehow more realistic compared with the previous subtype. The robots in this subtype are often based upon real world science. You can watch anime such as this on the Internet, as well.

Some examples of Real Robot mechas include Gundam, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Vandread, and Full Metal Panic. It will be more exciting to watch anime under the Real Robot genre when you have enough knowledge about them. There are western cartoons that adapted Real Robot concepts such as the ever popular Transformers.
