Myths and Biblical stories allowed many earlier artists the chance to paint the female nude without worrying about censorship. The Greek story of Andromeda is one such subject. The painting below features the Greek Myth about a nude woman, Andromeda – daughter of a king, being sacrificed to a sea monster. Eventually, the hero Perseus comes along and slays the ocean beast, rescuing Andromeda. Perseus then weds the beautiful princess and more stuff happens. This dramatic moment in the story has been illustrated many times – here is a naked damsel in distress – what a great subject to portray.
This particular painting was created by the marvelous artist Gustave Doré.
