The Pin-Up Art of Humorama

During the 1950s, under the Humorama banner, Abe Goodman churned out scores of cheap digest-sized magazines that featured cheesecake photos and single panel pin-up cartoons. The digests featured the likes of Playboy’s Jack Cole, Archie’s Dan DeCarlo and glamour girl legend Bill Ward. In addition to these three pin-up cartooning luminaries, other notable who contributed to the pages of the Humorama digests included longtime illustrator Jefferson Machamer; Basil Wolverton, who influenced a genera

Your Questions About Pin Up Girl Tattoos Meaning

George asks…

Help Finding Free Psychobilly/Pin-Up Girl Wallpapers/Sites?

I’m trying to find HD widescreen wallpapers for my 1440×900 resolution laptop. Specifically I’m looking for wallpapers of pinup girls.

I should be more specific. Maybe the term I should use is burlesque, I’m really not sure. I mean like psychobilly/rockabilly girls – tattoos, corsets, pumps, stockings, piercings, etc – like suicide girls but styled after the models of the 1950s. Anybody know what I’m talking about?

I can find scattered pictures of girls here and there, but no site offering a selection of FREE, nice, high-def scans of pinup girls. Anybody know of such a site? Thanks!

Pin-up answers:

You want high-definition pics of tattooed and pierced chicks wearing corsets and pumps?

You may find something on google or google images: Type in something like tattooed chicks or tattooed pin-ups

Charles asks…

Pin-up Girl tattoo?

Hi!…

I’m looking to get a tattoo of a `pinup girl` on my leg. So I’ve looked and looked all over the internet and I cant seem to find what I’m looking for..

I don’t just want the normal looking girl as I want her to be holding a gun or something. Looking mean and tough.. 😉

Anyway, I was hoping someone out there would know a good web site or maybe they have drawn one??.. Any advice would be great!

Pin-up answers:

Go to your tattoo artist and explain to them what you want, maybe bring in a picture of a pin up girl that you somewhat like and then explain the changes you want done to here, they should be able to help you come up with something that you really like.

For a general selection of girl pin-up tattoos visit: http://www.tattoojohnny.com/search/pinup or http://www.tattoophotogalleries.com/index.php/component/option,com_datsogallery/Itemid,89/func,viewcategory/catid,23/

Susan asks…

Can Anyone help me to draw up a pin-up tattoo?

here’s an explanation of what i want so if you could draw that would be great

Location: left ribs
Size: Height: Below the armpit to just before the waist, Width: size to be proportional to the height (basically the tattoo will take up my entire left rib area
Color: Mostly Grayscale with an unnatural hair color (i.e. blue, purple, green, red), and if possible purple eyes
Overview: So it’s a naked pinup who is sitting with her legs slightly crossed and a hand covering her area. She has decent sized breasts but not huge and a slightly large derriere. She is covered, and I mean covered in tattoos, almost a full body suit status. Tattoos everywhere except the face. She has ears, and nipple piercings (loops for the nipples) and a lip and eyebrow ring. She also has a naval piercing with something chainy (as opposed to just a jewel in the belly button) and a nose piercing (the curved type that comes out both the nostrils)
Sidenotes:
For the tattoos, mostly tribal would work but a nice rose piece is a must (kinda like Kat Von D) and it doesn’t matter where but the more assorted her tattoos are, the better.
For the piercings, they don’t all have to be there but the more the better and the nipple and lip piercings must be there
If possible, her (hipbones I think they are) must be showing, like when you see a thin girl the bump on each side of her lower stomach

Pin-up answers:

These are fabulous works of art. You probably will find the answer by looking at the flash that was used to make these tattoos. They usually have the artist’s name on them….

Helen asks…

Why do most “modern” pin up girls look like goths?

I mean, they used to look like this in the ’50s:

http://www.irisbersa.se/wp-content/uploads/pinuppa-11.jpg

And now they look like this:

http://www.formatmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/shannonbrooke_img1.jpg

Why is it that pin up girls nowadays always have the indie haircut and loads of tattoos?

Pin-up answers:

Well today’s ‘pin-up’ is more of a classic style of photography, it really could be of any one. But the pinup style of photography is kind of ‘campy’ now, and thus people with alternative styles tend to frequent it more. There is something ironic about the classic perfect 50’s pin-up being turned into goth, punk or zombie themed, and that’s what makes it interesting.

But ‘pin up’ today as just changed into basic ‘modeling’. Though today the models show a lot more skin.

Examples of modern pinup:

http://image.sporttruck.com/f/10066219/0804st_z+mercedes_terrell+2008_pinup.jpg

But also… The 50s wasn’t as ‘non-goth’ as you would think. Lets not forget the infamous Bettie Page. It was her that really inspires the modern ‘goth pinup’ styles of today.

http://images.eonline.com/eol_images/Entire_Site/20081205/293.page.bettie.lr.120508.jpg

And there are lots of more ‘racey’ photos of her in bondage etc.

So really pin up today isn’t mainly goth by any means. It’s just reflecting today as it did the fifties two different styles of pinup. Actually, I think there are so many different types of pin-ups today we maybe in Pin-up art heavan….
