About Cameos

Intricately carved cameos have been produced since ancient times. Cameos are carvings of images in relief against a contrasting background. Read on for the history of cameos and buying cameo jewelry online.

We still love cameos, really: The Victorian Era saw a re-birth to the fashion of wearing cameos, and with it, wire wrap sculpture. The two went hand in hand, flourishing for a number of years as artists created signature pieces that were handed down from generation to generation, before the art form faded into obscurity.

Cameo Glass: Cameo glass is a luxury form of glass art produced by etching and carving through fused layers of differently colored glass to produce designs, usually with white opaque glass figures and motifs on a dark-colored background. The technique is first seen in ancient Illyrian art of about 30BC, where it was an alternative to the luxury engraved gem vessels in cameo style that used naturally layered semi-precious gemstones such as onyx and agate. Glass allowed consistent and predictable colored layers, even for round objects.

Artistically the most notable modern work occurred during a the revival in the Art Nouveau period, by makers such as Émile Gallé and Daum of Nancy, when Roman-inspired subjects and color schemes were totally abandoned, and plant and flower designs predominated. Cameo glass maker Louis Comfort Tiffany also made a small number of cameo pieces, which were a French specialty in this period, though other firms such as the Czech Moser Glass were producers, too.

Not your Grandmother's Cameo – Shrink Plastic Jewelry « The Tamara

Jewelry findings/chain/pin back. A quick side note on shrink plastic: The translucent stuff is pretty easy to find in craft stores. But if you want to be SUPER thrifty, you can use #6 plastic, which is found in salad bar or to-go containers . It's sometimes hard to find pieces big enough that are flat to do this project with, but give a whirl, Up-cyclers! First punch or cut out your scalloped circle. This will be the base of your cameo.

There's also this one, which has the cameo pin up on the choker. But lacey collars aren't a very every-day accessory – so I've had an idea… For two looks in one, I've decided the most efficient thing to do would be to
