The painting featured in this post is by the artist Guy Head. Guy Head (1753 – 1800) was known for his skill as a portraitist and his attention to detail in capturing the likeness and personality of his subjects. His paintings and engravings were highly regarded in his time, and he left behind a legacy as one of the leading portraitists of the late 18th century in England.
Head did a series of paintings about Echo and Narcissus and below is shown the one titled “Echo Flying from Narcissus.”
According to Greek Mythology, one day, as Narcissus, a handsome young man, was wandering through the forest, when he noticed a nymph named Echo. Echo, who had been cursed by the goddess Hera to only be able to repeat the words of others, fell in love with Narcissus. However, Narcissus was not interested in Echo as he was always only interested in himself. He rejected Echo’s advances.
Heartbroken, Echo retreated into the forest, where she wasted away. As she died, her body turned into an echo, only able to repeat the last words spoken to her.
