Nymphs Surrounding Satyr William Bouguereau
Nov 29th, 2022 by Aldouspi

One of the most famous paintings by William-Adolphe Bouguereau is entitled “Nymphs and Satyr.” When first displayed, it was declared the “best painting of a generation” by art critics. When the painting was initially shown to the public, it was accompanied by a verse from the ancient Roman poet, Publius Statius, to give context to the artwork: “Conscious of his shaggy hide and from childhood untaught to swim, he dares not trust himself to deep waters.”

The painting shows several nude nymphs teasing and inviting a satyr to join their fun in a pool of water. Will the satyr’s desire overcome his fear of the water?
