About Artist John Singer Sargent American painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was a famous portrait painter during his lifetime. He painted about 900 oil paintings and executed more than 2,000 watercolors. He also left behind countless sketches and charcoal drawings.
An American by birth, Sargent grew up and spent most of his life in Europe where he studied about famous European artworks and associated with several famous artists. As a portrait painter, his subject included President Theodore Roosevelt and the acandulous (at the time) Madame X.
