This cartoon by Bors illustrates, in a most compelling way, the problem too many police departments have across the nation. Police officers and the Departments they work for do not see individual citizens in the same way, ie, as equal people to serve and protect. Too often it seems that being white or rich means you are human – but being non-white and poor makes you less than human in law enforcements’ eyes.
That attitude has to change. We need our police friends to get back to serving and protecting. For example, once you have a suspect in custody – police officers do not get to gang beat them. In fact, it is now each officer’s duty to make sure the in custody person reaches the jail or station safely. In the years to come, let ensure by training and observation and the removal of bad apples, that the police in our neighborhoods become heroes again and not the enemy…
