i wasn’t a big fan of the first book, but hoped the second would be better. wrong. i notice the fairies are getting quite human. first off, i thought the fairies were vegans? all that talk about mud men killing all the animals and such, plus holly asked for veggies when held captive in fowl manor. so what’s w/ the burger joint?? the lep takes refuge in a burger joint. second, i thought the fairies looked down on man. they use terms like mud man and such. so why are they watching our movies? copying our culture. fairy culture seems WAY too much like human culture for a race so superior and all. another problem i had w/ this book is the use of names. colfer is constantly switching nouns. cudgeon to briar to cudgeon-ALL ON THE SAME PAGE! needs to be on or the other. he does the same w/ chix verbil. this is very inconsistant and done a lot. the lack of plot and watering down of the artwmis character is also a problem. i hate giving up on a series, so will try the third book and hope for the best

I just finished reading the book. It’s nice, but I can’t say I was as thrilled as I am with each and any Harry Potter book. The book should be fatter! More character development needed – as it is, most characters (especially the villains) are cartoonish and flat. Or was it intended as a parody on Russian Mafya books? Also, the use of Russian and pseudo-Russian words is laughable. “Irlandskii” means “Irish”, but it’s an adjective that can’t be used in regard to a person to describe nationality. That would be “Irlandetz”. “Khuligany” doesn’t mean “enforcerers”, it means punks, street bullies. They are scary to a woman on a dark street, but can’t be Mafia! “Zdravstvuyte” is a wrong from to use between a father and a son – that would be “zdravstvuy”. And so on and so force. (Russian is my mother tongue, so I know what I’m talking about).

As a teacher, this stuff really bothers me. Why on earth is it a good idea to celebrate violence, bad manners, nasty behavior, and just pure dysfunctionality in kids’ books? Not only do they not need this garbage, but the most annoying thing about it is that all of it is a gimmick for limited writing talent. I don’t find Mr. Colfer’s prose any better at times than that of my fifth grade students.

I was disapointed in the book Artemis Fowl And the Arctic Incident. I feel that Eoin Colfer didn’t create as much action, wit, or drama as he did in the first book. In this book you see from the eyes of a fairy and a boy mastermind. The plot of this story is complex but basically is based on the fact that a Russian Mafiya has Artemises father, and Opal Koboi is trying to take over the fairy world and eventually the WHOLE world. I wish I saw more wit from Foaly, Artemis, and Cpt. Short. The lack of suspense was disappointing. Sorry, I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone.
