A bit about Modesty Blaise
Modesty Blaise is the title of a British comic strip featuring a fictional female character of the same name. The strip was created by author Peter O’Donnell and illustrator Jim Holdaway in 1963.
In the strip, Modesty Blaise is often portrayed with a close-up of her legs in fishnet stockings, or you might see her depicted as a huntress with a bow-and-arrow and a revolver. Another aspect of the art in the comic is that the points-of-view often shift among characters mid-paragraph.
The story is that Modesty is a former refugee and survivor of the terrible disruptions caused by the war (World War Two), and as a child drifted across Eastern Europe and the Middle East in the company of an old professor. As a young adult, she fights bad guys and becomes like a “female James Bond” and is very badass.
Characterized as one of the coolest, most memorable action heroine of all time, Ms. Blaise often uses a single yawara, which she calls a “kongo,” along with her wits, charm and fighting ability. The Yawara takes the form of one or two small, thick sticks that protrude about an inch from each side of the hand looking much like small dumbbells. These weapons were also known as Kongou, a Buddhist symbolic object, carried by monks in Feudal Japan.
A comedic spy-fi DeLuxe Color film, called “Modesty Blaise” was produced in the United Kingdom and released worldwide in 1966 – it is a campy look at our heroine in action. A second Modesty Blaise Movie, entitled “My Name Is Modesty” was made in 2004 asnd is well worth catching a view of.
