This review is from: Johnny Lightning – Cartoon Network – Speed Buggy (1998) w/original filmstrip animation cel art (Toy)

Speed Buggy I remember watching reruns in the 80s of this cartoon when I was a kid but that’s about it. I think it was a 70s cartoon done by the people who brought us Scooby Doo (incidentally you can get the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine as a Johnny Lightning die-cast vehicle). Anyway what I do remember is that Speedie was a pretty cool little orange dune buggy who saved his less intelligent human friends from a lot jams. So when I came across this I just had to own it.

The vehicle presents extremely well in it’s blister pack. You can see the car from all angles other than the side blocked by the cardboard of the blister pack. This means there’s really no need to take it out of the packet as it looks good with the actual image of Speedie and his human friends from the cartoon series behind. The blister pack also contains an original filmstrip animation cel artwork. There’s at least 20 different ones of these so if you’re ordering online who knows what you’ll get. Mine has Speed Buggy putting his arm (tyre) around the female human with the two male humans in the shot as well. I know that withJohnny Lightning The Flintstones Barney Rubble’s Sports car you can get a cel that has the exact same image as the picture on the card so I would assume they also did this with Speed Buggy. If you’re going to take him out and throw away the packaging you may want to hunt that one down.

Other great cartoon 1/64 die cast vehicles are Johnny Lighting The Simpsons vehicles (Amazon only sells Marge’s station wagon for some reason but you can get the school bus, Wiggum’s police cruiser and Homer’s pink car as well), Speed Racer’s Mach 5, plus there’s also the Johnny Lightning Cat in the Hat vehicles, Johnny Lightning Wacky Races vehicles and others too but Amazon does not sell them at the time of this review.
