Josephine Baker Topless Arms Raised

Like many black Americans over the years Josephine Baker first found her fame in France. In the 1920’s, dancer and singer Josephine Baker took Paris by storm with her exotic dancing and its odd stylized movements and her voice. In the photo below, Baker is topless and is standing in a classical arms upraised dancer’s pose. She is wearing a beaded necklace, hoop earrings and her famous banana belt skirt.

Baker’s exotic beauty and sensual appeal generated nicknames like “Black Venus,” “Black Pearl” and “Creole Goddess.”
