I’ve seen Matt Dixon’s art in a number of other venues previous to this book (including the art tutorial book Fantasy Artist’s Figure Drawing Bible: Ready-to-Draw Characters and Step-by-Step Rendering Techniques) which he wrote and illustrated and, having admired his work, decided to take a look at this book. I was not disappointed. This art book – oversized, printed on thick, glossy paper, with good-quality printing in full color – showcases Dixon’s pin-up art. His images tend to be of edgier, more violently-inclined women – many are barbarians, space-marines, axe-murderers, mutants, etc. – but what you really admire is his style: each painting has its own personality and a vibrant, well-controlled color scheme. Several of his paintings, I was interested to see, had a subdued vibe similar to those of Brom (especially in Offerings (Paper Tiger)) with a touch of Simon Biseley. He shifts in tone between stillness and energy, which is great to see in fantasy and horror painting. Overall, I’m very pleased with this book.
