Original Production Animation Cel from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”

An original, on of a kind, hand-painted production animation cel from Walt Disney’s 1989 feature film, “The Little Mermaid.” Unlike sericels, which have runs of thousands, production cels are each unique and represent a single frame of a film. Production Cels – Nice Art, Nice Investment

Production Cels as an Investment

Investors are always looking for a better rate of return on their investments. To make that happen they are diversifying their portfolio by trading fine wines, truffles, jewelry and antiques. Another type of collectible and potential investment are original production cels from animated films.

People often purchase this kind of work for their nostalgic value as they want to own a part of animation art they watched as a kid and, of course, they enjoy displaying animation cels as artwork for their walls.

But their value as investment is also a consideration. Production cels from animations are becoming rare as most studios have turned to digital media production as it’s quicker and cost effective.

Production cels, after a film was completed, were typically given away on video sets or sold individually once the animation process was completed. The more popular shows and movies demanded higher prices for the cels. Today some cels sell for thousands of dollars.

Animation cels can be broken down into the following groups – limited editions, sericels and production cels. Production cels usually fetch the most as they are hand-painted and “under the camera” cels, which are the most collectible.

The prices of cels depend upon the interest in the original animated film, by it’s age, the animation studio and quality. Some unique cels have fetched record prices at art auctions, such as a group shot of the characters in Who Framed Roger Rabbit which sold for $6,000 at Sotheby’s in 1989. Other cels which have high potential values are old Disney films, such as The Little Mermaid and the early years of The Simpsons, which now only use digital media.
